A New Source of Energy
by Dusty R. Green, M.Ed., Research Scientist

People worldwide are discovering a new-found energy source -- sublingual vitamin B12.  As a cheaper alternative to energy drinks, sublingual B12 taken every 5-6 hours provides a critical "missing link" to our lack of motivation and energy-lows.  Since our bodies utilize and/or expel water soluble vitamins every 4-6 hours, replacing B12 on a consistent basis makes it necessary to maintain energy levels -- particularly as we age.  Our diets are dreadfully lacking in this precious vitamin and most oral B12 supplements are killed by the liver before they can be used by our bodies.  Acidic blood also adds to absorption problems of all vitamins while alcohol consumption expedites B12 deficiency along with other vitamins.

The deficiency disease of B12 is called pernicious anemia which is characterized by large, immature red blood cells that aren't being fed adequately.  A deficiency can have serious consequences long before anemia is evident.  It often manifests itself in the development of a neurological dysfunction that is akin to senile dementia and/or Alzheimer's disease.  Many people exhibiting symptoms of Alzheimer's may actually be suffering from a B12 deficiency.  The deficiency may be dealt with through effective supplementation, thus, making it an inexpensive self-test.

Low levels of B12 have also been associated with low sperm count, asthma, depression, AIDS, diabetic neuropathy, tinnitus, and multiple sclerosis.  Clearly, it is very important to maintain adequate body stores of this crucial vitamin.

Dosage:  The dose of oral B12 supplements for sleep support is 3000 mcg (3mg) a day, while 2000 mcg (2mg) a day has proven useful in lowering homocysteine and correcting B12 deficiency.  In published studies, it took four weeks for sleep support, and four months for the homocysteine-lowering effect -- so, be patient.  People with more serious issues should take higher doses in the range of 3000-5000 mcg, supplemented with SAM-e (s-adenosylmethionine).

The neurologically active form of vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) is the recommended form to consume.  The potential benefits are well-worth the modest price.  It is the methylcobalamin form of B12 that has been used in most European and Japanese studies that show efficacy.  The liver converts about 1% of ingested cyanocobalamin (the kind in most tablets/capsules and/or multi-formulas) into methylcobalamin but it is far more efficient to dissolve a good tasting methylcobalamin lozenge or liquid in the mouth for immediate assimilation into the brain.
