Butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT) has been used since 1947 in rubber and petroleum products and, more recently, in plastics.  It has been used since 1949 in many fat-containing foods, in edible fats and oils and in cosmetics.  Thus, there is widespread human exposure to this compound.
