OptiZinc® is a superior bioavailable form of zinc. The form of zinc that assimilates best into your bloodstream is zinc methionate (methionine), known commercially as OptiZinc. OptiZinc® is a patented 1:1 complex of zinc and methionine, the amino acid best absorbed by the body. Methionine is an amino acid with antioxidant activity which assists detoxification. Methionine aids the metabolism of omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Some zinc binding ligands, such as picolinic acid, have been shown to remove iron from cells and cause anemia, or increase lead absorption. OptiZinc® and L-OptiZinc® will not remove iron from cells or cause anemia. In fact, a 1991 study showed that a combination of zinc and methionine actually inhibits lead absorption and reduces lead levels in the blood.

Zinc is a mineral essential for formation of superoxide dismutase. Superoxide dismutase is one of the body’s most important free radical scavengers and cannot be directly supplemented. Zinc also supports wound healing, immunity, taste sensitivity, protein synthesis, insulin production, and reproduction including organ development and sperm count and motility. For infants, human breast milk has been shown to enhance zinc absorption when compared with formula or cows milk. In addition, optimum zinc levels are associated with healthier pregnancies. Zinc deficiency will adversely effect the development of the skeletal system, nervous system and brain function in the growing fetus.

Zinc deficiency is associated with acne and other skin conditions. Healthy testosterone levels in males and females both lend to enhanced sex drive when zinc levels are optimized. Zinc helps maintain the function of the liver and the release of vitamin A.

Research shows that a high-fiber meal can inhibit zinc absorption. A 1992 study showed that OptiZinc® actually resists dietary fiber and phytate, and increases zinc absorption better than ordinary zinc supplements tested. In addition, unlike other zinc supplements, OptiZinc® will not adversely affect copper absorption. Also, iron supplements can reduce zinc levels in the body.
