Vitamin B-3 (niacin) - Side-Effects, Benefits, Vitamins, Deficiency - Dose

Niacin is the only B vitamin that can be synthesized in the body from the amino acid tryptophan.180-183 In its coenzyme forms, niacin is crucial to energy transfer reactions, particularly the metabolism of glucose, fat, and alcohol.184,185 Niacin’s beneficial effects on blood lipids is well documented.186-201

Niacin, in doses of one to three grams per day, is one of the safest and most effective substances to support healthy cholesterol levels. Niacin releases histamine and causes capillary dilation, which may cause a harmless flushing of the skin. This effect can be lessened by taking the niacin after eating or by starting with a low dose of 50 to100 mg. Then, as tolerance develops, you may begin increasing it progressively.
