Published scientific studies document that people who eat the most fruits and vegetables have much lower incidences of health problems. Few people, however, consistently eat enough plant foods to protect against common age-related decline and commercial multivitamins do not provide all of the vital plant components needed to maintain good health.1-3 Life Extension Mix provides concentrations of the fruit and vegetable extracts that researchers have found to be protective against a wide variety of cellular insults.

Life Extension Mix contains 92 unique vegetable, fruit, and herbal extracts along with high-potency amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and special antioxidants. The formula is fortified with botanical extracts that help maintain healthy cells via physiological processes separate from traditional antioxidants. Cooking can destroy key nutrients and enzymes in vegetables depleting them of their health benefits. Commercial agriculture processes often result in fruits and vegetables that have not reached maturity and optimal nutrient content. Life Extension Mix provides key compounds found in vegetables and antioxidants found in fruits that are often lost in food production and processing.

Epidemiological studies show that increased intake of polyphenols is associated with a reduced risk of major cardiac events. The ability of cocoa polyphenols to support endothelial function by maintaining healthy nitric oxide levels is the primary protective mechanism. The secondary benefit of suppressing dangerous inflammatory factors is another manner by which cocoa polyphenols may reduce cardiovascular risks.4-8 The Life Extension Mix formula has been upgraded to provide 30 mg of standardized cocoa polyphenols in each daily dose. Based on the research this is the minimum potency of cocoa polyphenols that healthy people will benefit from consuming each day.

Life Extension Mix also contains high potency green tea. Life Extension Mix provides 325 mg of a decaffeinated green tea extract that is standardized to contain 98% (318.5 mg) of polyphenols and 45% (146.25 mg) of epigallocatechin gallate EGCG) to which scientists attribute green tea's health benefits.9-15 The amount of polyphenols (including EGCG) in Life Extension Mix is equivalent to drinking 3-6 cups of green tea per day. Scientists have identified multiple mechanisms by which green tea extract protects against LDL oxidation, neuronal oxidation, and a host of other structural and functional age related changes.

Fruit and Vegetable Extracts - Luteolin is a flavonoid found in parsley, artichoke, basil, celery and other foods. When measured against 27 other flavonoids, luteolin provided the best DNA protection. One favorable mechanism of luteolin is its ability to inhibit oxidative damage to cellular DNA. Another unique benefit is luteolin's ability to suppress excess levels of dangerous inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 and interleukin 1B.16 Life Extension Mix contains a standardized dose of 8 mg luteolin.

Broccoli is touted as one of the most important vegetables to help maintain healthy DNA. Broccoli contains several active constituents with sulphoraphane being the most significant because of its unique detoxification and DNA protecting effects. Life Extension Mix provides a concentrated broccoli mixture that provides standardized extracts of sulphoraphane and glucosinolates, two compounds attributed to broccoli's multiple protective benefits. Broccoli is also a natural source of gene protecting chlorophyll.17-21

D-glucarate is a botanical extract found in grapefruit, apples, oranges, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. D-glucarate effectively supports a detoxification process that helps to remove DNA toxins from the body.22,23 The daily dose of Life Extension Mix provides 200 mg D-glucarate.

Lutein, an extract found in spinach and collard greens, has been shown to help maintain critical pigments in the eye macula, while the carotenoid alpha-carotene has demonstrated antioxidant activity far greater than beta-carotene. Lycopene is the red carotenoid in tomatoes has shown potent effects in helping to maintain healthy DNA structure. Lycopene also protects against LDL oxidation, and aids in maintaining a healthy prostate. Life Extension Mix contains 60 times more lutein and 10 times more lycopene compared to Centrum. Most multivitamin supplements provide no vegetable extracts.

Olive polyphenols help to protect against LDL oxidation, suppress free radicals, and stabilize cell membranes.28-30 Life Extension Mix contains a potent olive juice extract standardized to contain 7 percent of the best-documented polyphenol called hydroxytyrosol.31 The amount of hydroxytyrosol in Life Extension Mix is equivalent to drinking one ounce of virgin olive oil per day.32-33

Sesame lignans enhance the effects of vitamin E. Sesame and its lignans have a broad range of applications in human health. This includes increasing human tissue levels of vitamin E by facilitating carrier proteins in the liver to deliver nutrients to cells throughout the body.34,35

Sesame lignans increase the anti-inflammatory index of fish oils and help maintain healthy cholesterol/LDL levels in those already within normal range.36-39 Life Extension Mix contains 10 mg sesame lignan extract to provide the direct benefits of the lignans and augment the effects of vitamin E and other nutrients in the body such as gamma-tocopherol and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

Pterostilbene is a compound naturally found in blueberries and grapes that has been shown to have beneficial, antiaging effects on gene expression and to promote healthy cognitive function.

Vitamins - Vitamin B5 (Pyridoxal 5-phosphate) helps protect against glycation reactions, a toxic process by which sugars bind to proteins to form nonfunctional structures in the body.

High potency vitamin D3: Doctors used to be concerned that too much vitamin D could be toxic. Over the past few years, however, an increasing body of evidence indicates that it takes much higher doses of vitamin D (perhaps over 10,000 IU/day) to result in toxicity in a healthy person. The concern expressed by researchers today is that fear of vitamin D toxicity is keeping many people from supplementing with enough vitamin D which is critical for maintaining bone density. In response to studies showing that even those who take standard vitamin D supplements are not obtaining adequate amounts, Life Extension Mix provides 800 IU vitamin D3 per daily dose. In addition, consider the fact that approximately 20 minutes of midday sun exposure (at least 40% of skin exposed) equates to absorbing approximately 20,000 IU into the typical Caucasian body. Who Should Not Take Copper: Some people appear to be especially sensitive to copper supplementation. Those with Wilsons disease should avoid copper supplements altogether. Wilsons disease is a genetic disorder that causes copper to accumulate in the liver and then be abnormally delivered in large pools to different parts of the body where it may inflict damage. Also, cancer patients who are on a physician-supervised copper depletion therapy should avoid copper supplementation. As such, we offer versions of Life Extension Mix without any copper for those who are already obtaining enough copper from other sources or those who should avoid supplements containing copper.

It is rare but some people may experience a "die-off" effect, also called the Herxheimer Reaction. A die-off effect is caused by a rapid increase in volume of stored waste material (mercury, fomaldehyde, aluminum, cosmetics, etc.) and pathogens in the body.
