Varicose veins are a common indication of impaired circulatory function known as venous insufficiency. Normally circulating blood flows upwards from the legs and feet to return to the heart. This gravity-defying feat is accomplished by the combination of muscle contractions that force blood upward through the veins and a system of one-way valves that prevent blood from falling backwards in between contractions. Venous insufficiency occurs when this function is impaired -- either when valves become damaged or when calf muscles can no longer force the blood flow properly. Chronic venous insufficiency can also be due to blood clots (phlebitis). Other symptoms of venous insufficiency include swelling of the legs and ankles (edema), leg aches, ulcerations, and hemorrhoids. One way that horse chestnut functions is to support the reduction of the number and diameter of small pores in the capillary membranes, thus reducing the escape of fluid into the surrounding tissues. This "sealing" effect in the capillaries improves blood flow in the veins, and reduces swelling of small veins in the legs.
These products contain herbs and nutrients demonstrated to support venous tone and structural integrity. As studies have shown, constipation/straining may worsen/cause varicose veins. Therefore, this products effectiveness may be enhanced by consumption of magnesium which some people use as a natural laxative.
