Actors James Coburn & Robert Vaughn James Coburn, veteran actor was interviewed in The Journal of Longevity, vol. 5, #2 (1999).  Coburn talks about treatment by his conventional doctor concerning joint pain.  On the subject of steroid anti-inflamatories, he states "They didn't do anything.  They just numbed things.  It didn't help.  I went to see him [his doctor] and that was it."  He went on to say "I couldn't stand up.  It caused me such agony and pain that I never wanted to get up.  I'd break out in a sweat every time I stood up." After trying every form of prescription drug on the market including electromagnetic therapy for his debilitating condition, his wife of 5 years turned him on to MSM.  After using it Coburn raved about MSM for helping with his long bout with joint pain side effects free.  He has become a great fan of MSM and gives it to his friends. As with some natural remedies, the therapeutic effects of this product may not come immediately.  It may take 2 weeks to experience pain relief.  Some people do not get relief until 8 weeks after their initial dose.  In general, joints take longer than other body parts.  Regardless, when you experience pain relief it is recommended you continue taking this (or other joint products) for at least eight weeks.  Then, 3-6 months later, repeat this process to help rebuild any cartilage, tendons, or ligaments that may have degenerated.

Glucosamine is a naturally occuring compound.  It is necessary for the body's natural production of joint lubricants necessary to maintain healthy cartilage and joint function side effects free.  Numerous published studies document glucosamine's ability to function as a chondroprotective agent.  Glucosamine provides the raw material needed for chondrocytes to regenerate cartilage.  A glucosamine deficiency caused by aging and/or trauma can lead to joint pain.  The oral consumption of glucosamine salts (among other nutrients below) provides the raw material needed for joint cartilage.  In nine European studies, the oral administration of glucosamine produced major reductions in joint pain, joint tenderness and joint swelling.  Improvements in joint function and overall physical performance were noted in these studies compared to placebo and/or the drug ibuprofen.  While ibuprofen worked faster than glucosamine in relieving pain, glucosamine was instrumental in rebuilding the joint cartilage matrix.  Even though studies show that glucosamine takes 4-10 weeks to produce noticeable results, the new formula discussed in this article has been producing noticeable reductions in inflammation and pain in most people in as little as two weeks side effects free.

Chondroitin helps to prevent destructive enzymes from attacking critical joint components.  The chondroitin sulfates provide the structural components of cartilage found in joints.  The chondroitin sulfates have been tested extensively in humans with outstanding success as heart/circulatory agent.  Research studies have provided much useful data on the safety and effectiveness of chrondroitin sulfates.  When intramuscular injections of chondroitin sulfates were given to patients, there were major reductions in joint pain and increases in joint function side effects free.  Chondroitin sulfates inhibit free radicals that degrade joint cartilage and collagen.  Chondroitin sulfates also improve blood circulation to joints, which enables antioxidants and glucosamine to enter inflamed joints to stimulate the required repair process.  Like glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate attracts water into the cartilage matrix.  Likewise, it has the ability to prevent enzymes from dissolving cartilage.  Recent studies have shown very good results from long-term treatment with chondroitin sulfate at reducing pain and increasing range of motion.  Glucosamine alone or in combination with chondroitin sulfate and MSM helps with joint pain and repair according to one of the leading authors on the subject.

MSM (methylsulphonymethane) is a naturally occurring organic sulfur compound that the body needs for healthy cell repair.  MSM promotes new cell growth and helps with allergies and parasites and side effects associated with them.  It is a high quality, bioavailable source of methyl sulfonyl methane, an organic source of sulfur shown in clinical studies to have a beneficial effect on painful conditions.  MSM has also been shown to improve blood circulation, relieve constipation and enhance the immune system.

BioCell Collagen II is a natural hydrolyzed Type 2 collagen ingredient that provides a complex matrix of elements (collagen Type 2, chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid) that support joint and skin health.  With the patented process, BioCell Collagen II was developed as a low molecular weight ingredient that could be easily absorbed by the body.

Vitamin C has been researched extensively concerning connective tissue strength (tendons, ligaments, arterial, and vein strength).  Vitamin C is crucial for the proper function of the enzyme proto-collagen hydroxylase, which produces collagen, the primary constituent of the granulation tissue that heals a wound and the key component in blood vessel walls.  Vitamin C must be replenished daily because it is water-soluble and any excess is excreted rather than stored thus helping to eliminate the possibilities of side effects.  The scientific literature is replete with information showing Vitamin C to be therapeutic in amounts of at least 3 grams per day (divided doses throughout the day are best).  Less than 3 grams per day consumption does not show significant benefits -- considered by most authorities on the subject.

Another supplement is SAM-e.  A two-year study involving 108 patients (97 by the end of the study) was published in the American Journal of Medicine in 1987 showing SAM-e alleviates pain and alleviates foul moods in people with joint pain.  Participants in the study were given 600 mg of SAM-e per day the first two weeks, and 400 mg/day thereafter.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids
There is now solid evidence of the value of treating joints with omega-6 essential fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).  These essential fatty acids are precursors of prostaglandins such as PG1, which have known positive side effects, and decrease the activity of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins such as PG2.  Here are findings from some of the new studies documenting the benefits of essential fatty acids in dealing with joints:
