Chromium polynicotinate is a well assimilated form which may have more benefits for certain conditions than does the picolinate form. Chromium polynicotinate seems to have some definite advantages over chromium picolinate, including even better bioavailability. It now appears that niacin-bound chromium is a safer form of chromium for supplementation. Some studies have also shown that niacin is necessary for chromium supplements to be of benefit. Chromium aspartate, an unpatented and much less expensive form of chromium, appears also be well absorbed but it does not have the benefit of the level of scientific testing that the patented forms have. Chromium occurs in two chemical forms, called trivalent and hexavalent. The hexavalent form is usually a byproduct of the metallurgy industry (for example, chrome automobile parts). It may indeed be toxic if inhaled. Although it is not recommended for ingestion, when the hexavalent form is consumed orally it is quickly converted into the harmless, bioavailable trivalent form. Chromium intended for dietary supplementation is always trivalent. In contrast to hexavalent chromium, trivalent chromium is an essential micronutrient that is exceptionally well tolerated. Although still somewhat controversial, chromium supplementation is believed by many reputable scientists and physicians to be an important tool in health. A review of the scientific literature indicates the reason many people do not respond to chromium is that the dose they take is too small. For many years, Life Extension has included niacin in its chromium supplements. In the body, chromium combines with niacin. Chromium Polynicotinate is a niacin-bound, absorbable form that may be used as part of your diet. For instance, supplementing with 200-400 mcg per day of chromium has not produced consistent benefits, whereas doses of 600-1000 mcg per day have. In response to evidence that many people need higher does of chromium, a new formula has been developed that provides 500 mcg of chromium along with 60 mg of flush-free niacin in just one capsule. To provide full-spectrum benefits, the antioxidants and nutrients that have been specifically shown to protect against very high chromium intake are included.
