Each of the four herbs in Catuama are extracted and standardized individually in a pharmaceutical grade manufacturing facility.
The extracts are then mixed, quantitatively assayed and subsequently tested in a biological model at the local University for their bioactivity.
These extraordinary standards of quality assurance ensure that provides the same potency in every capsule.
What does standardization really mean?
Standardization of a product means that each capsule or tablet in a package needs to have the same therapeutic effect.
For chemical products, this is fairly easy to know as the efficacy depends on the amount of chemical substance in each capsule or tablet.
For phytomedicines, this is a little bit more complicated as the amount of extract in a capsule is not necessarily correlated to the efficacy.
What is responsible for the functioning of a phytomedicine is the amount of active principle in the extract.
Due to the variation of active principle in the fresh or dried plant,
extraction and concentration methods needed to be developed to assure a minimum amount of active principle to guarantee activity.
More reliable however for phytomedicines, is the biological standardization.
This means that each extract is sent to a laboratory to test and compare its activity to a previously defined standard of activity in a biological model.
Each extract is submitted to both types of testing, the determination of the amount of active principle in HPLC and the testing of its activity in a biological model at a university laboratory.
Is the caffeine from the guarana in Catuama detrimental?
We cannot say that caffeine is bad, but it needs to be used in moderate quantities.
Goodman & Gilman say that quantities up to 300mg daily are acceptable.
Other sources mention quantities up to 1200mg daily. Caffeine, however, is addictive and its regular use in high quantities can cause disturbances of the CNS, such as sleeplessness, restlessness and excitation.
One capsule of contains 40mg of caffeine, comparable to a cup of
green tea or cup of coffee.
A daily dose of 2 capsules would mean an intake of 80mg of caffeine which is far below the acceptable daily doses.
More importantly, the caffeine in Catuama comes from guarana and is therefore a natural caffeine (the extract produced is not spiked with artificial caffeine), which has fewer side effects than artificial caffeine or the caffeine in coffee.
Besides, some studies indicate that the activity of caffeine from guarana, in contrast to that of pure or artificial caffeine, is more gradual due to its binding with tannins (= guaranine complex), which reduces the side effects which could be caused by the caffeine in the guarana.
