Recommended Dosage for 5HTP:  Starting with a low dose (50 mg) and increasing the dose slowly (every 3 - 5 days) up to a maximum of 200 - 300 mg daily will also minimize risk of GI upset.  Total daily intake should be divided into 2 - 4 doses, with no more than 100 mg per dose.  Those suffering from gut disorders, such as ulcers, irritable bowel disease, Crohn's disease, celiac disease (sprue), etc., and those with just an extremely 'sensitive' GI tract, should probably use 5-HTP with caution, or not at all.  The use of aloe vera juice/gel and/or ginger extracts may lessen or eliminate the occasional GI side effects of 5-HTP.

Dr. Michael Murray statement:  "5-HTP, St. John's wort, and magnesium may all improve sleep quality in fibromyalgia.  I have found that the combination of these three supplements produces more consistent and better results than any one of them on their own.  In other words, for best results use all three."  Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, Prima Publishing (Revised 2nd Edition) ISBN: 0-76151157-1.

Recommended Dosage for Saint St. John's Wort:  Dr. Bloomfield recommends 300 mg of hypericum extract (containing 0.3% standardized hypericin) three times a day.  The adult dosage may be taken by adolescents.

Cautions:  St. Johns Wort has been known to increase photosensitivity in animals and may cause this same reaction in some people (although there has never been a reported case in humans).  Nevertheless, we recommend that strong sunlight and other sources of ultraviolet light (like tanning booths) be avoided when taking St. Johns Wart.
